Carved wooden Lukasa in anthropomorphic form, the figures long arms act as handles to the board, and the serne closed eyes of the ancestor face watch over the board. There was at one time many beads and shells mounted onto the board, now only remnants and one bead remain. Lukasa, or memory boards, are mnemonic devices that enable the elite members of this community to recall information concerning genealogy, court ceremony, cultural heroes, clan migrations. Luba peoples, DRC / Congo, Africa. Measures 12 inches tall x 5 inches wide. 14.5 inches tall on custom display stand.
