Williams, Assistant Adjutant General, Army of the Potomac (later Brigadier General, brevet Major General, delivered surrender documents between Grant and Lee, b. 1822, d. 1866), letter is regarding volunteer officers; (1) letter dated October 19, 1861 authorizing a leave of absence for Captain Chappel, 36th Regiment, N.Y. Volunteers (Chappel served until 1864 and saw action at Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, Chancellorsville, the letter sent to Francis A. Walker, Asst.
