Wood netsuke with colors. Japan, 19th century
By Nagamachi Shuzan. This sennin (immortal) lived for 1350 years and is said to have only eaten dog meat, weaving baskets for money and making magical pills that protected from disease and ensured a long life. He was able to conjure up a dragon from a vessel, as can be seen in this work. The scaled creature is coiled around his neck. Chinnan is wearing the leaf garment characteristic of sennin, with a very expressively carved head. Some painting with predominantly green, also red colors. Himotoshi on the sennin’s bottom, next to the signature SHU-ZAN 周 山.
