Lacquer, horn and gold inro. Japan, late 18th century
A three case inro showing the head of a dragon tatsu in the center of the main side. The dragon is carved from partly transparent yellow brown horn and attached to the inro, with the gilding on the background shining through. The dragon is surrounded by black clouds and flickering flames. The rear side shows the dragon’s scaled body. The lower and top sides show clouds in the shape of the nyoi, the mythical longevity mushroom. Gold nashiji on the interior.
