A VICTORIAN MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID COROMANDEL AND SANDALWOOD WRITING BOX / SLOPE, ENGLISH, CIRCA 1870-1880, of rectangular form, the top with rounded edges centering a diamond shape pieced mother-of-pearl inlaid medallion, medallion repeated as the lock escutcheon on the base front, the interior fitted at the top with a row of sandalwood framed compartments for two inkwells, a pen tray with curved coromandel insert, and a spring loaded box with coromandel insert, the purple velvet slope with heat stamped decorative borders and gilt fleur-de-lis and matching gilt stamped morocco border, ebonized sandalwood top face opening to sandelwood interior, together with two period pressed glass inkwells with brass crown emblazoned screw-on tops, height: 6 1/4", width: 13 3/4", depth: 9 1/8"; depth open: 18 1/4"
In overall fair condition, the top and sides with cracking to the wood, area of loss to mother-of-pearl inlaid escutcheon, velvet worn and cracked along seam, with losses to the morocco border, areas of chipping/loss to ebonized slope frame, overall surface rubbing and wear.
