Lot 0056
after GUIDO RENI (Italian 1575-1642) A CONTINENTAL BAROQUE STYLE PAINTING, "St. Jerome Reading," 18TH CENTURY, oil on canvas, unsigned. 12 1/4" x 10" NOTE: The composition of this painting is repeated by Continental artists, beginning as early as the 15th century. An early comparison, Albrecht Durer's (German 1471-1528) drypoint, "St. Jerome by the Pollard Willow," created 1512. In approximately 1615/1616 Anthony van Dyck paints "St. Jerome," that continues the traditional composition.

Darkened paint throughout, some craquelure, cracking near edges at stretchers, likely had restoration work in the 19th and 20th century, laid to antique canvas, some inpainting mostly near edges, and a varnish has . been applied, but overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age.
