VICTORIAN EBONY, BONE, AND BRASS NAVIGATOR'S OCTANT, LONDON, 1850-1860, with ebony "A" form frame fitted with bone plaque engraved "Spencer, Browning & Co London" and later "1795" over engraved bone scale calibrated 0 to 120 and bearing manufacturer's initials "SBR" for Spencer Browning & Co., fitted with brass vernier with angled correction slope and tangent screw continuing into the swinging brass index arm and etched index mirror with clips, with double pin hole peep sight, and three filters (two fitted with red glass and one green), horizon glass, back sight vane, and back horizon glass, raised on three baton form legs. Height: 11 7/8" Width: 9 5/8" Depth: 3 5/8"
In overall good condition with yellowing of bone plaques, rubbing of inked markings on plaques, overall strong original patina to brass, a rectangular plaque missing on the backside of the frame.
