A very nice map of the Spice Island. This map is believed to be the first large-scale map of the region, processed first by Portugal then the Dutch with a monopoly on the lucrative spice trade. Each of the islands is shown with groves of the prized clove and nutmeg trees and the location of their protective fortresses. Originated by Hondius, the plate was purchased by Blaeu in 1629. There are two cartouches, one enclosing a map of Bachian Island the other more conventionally the title. There are two compass roses and multiple types of sailing ships and two sea monsters.
