WHITING CO - North Attleboro, MA Origin as Holbrook Whiting & Albee in the 1870s. The firm was changed to F.M. Whiting & Co (1878), F.M. Whiting (1891), F.M. Whiting Co (1895) and Frank M. Whiting & Co (1896). From 1940 became a division of Ellmore Silver Co and went of of business 1960 c. Founded in Attleboro, Massachusetts, in 1866 by William Dean Whiting, who had already made a name for himself as a maker of sterling silver with Tifft & Whiting, the Whiting Manufacturing Company was one of the late 19th centuryÕs premier producers of sterling silver flatware, hollowware, and other decorative objects such as snuff boxes. A fire at the factory in 1875 forced the company to relocate to New York City, and began competing with Gorham and Tiffany. In 1905, Gorham purchased Whiting and made silver under the Whiting brand until it was discontinued in 1926.
