18th C. Stunning Chinese Huanghuali Waisted Painting table.  The rectangular top with a framed center slab of Huanghuali.  A carved band runs the perimeter of the table just below the top which is preceded by a handle-bar shaped apron that connects to each post. Lingzhi fungus carvings connect the apron to the underside of the table top. Lingzhi is known as the fungus of immortality, considered by the Daoist spiritualists as the nourishment of the Immortals (xian). The fungus is a symbol of longevity, since, when dry, it becomes extremely long lasting. It is used broadly in Chinese remedy. It was believed that Lingzhi funguses grew in the dwellings of the Immortals, and that whoever consumed the sacred fungus attained immortality. The legs are cylindrical in shape and taper outwards ever-so-slightly until they reach the ground. Very sturdy ancient construction with perfectly joined mortise and tenon.   The wood has a translucent glistening surface with natural patterns that please the eye. Some grain structures may be likened to the shape of ghost faces.
