Hader grew up in San Francisco, survived the earthquake and fire of 1906, and began his art studies there at the Institute of Art. He continued his studies at Acad?mie Julian in Paris (1911-14) where he absorbed the techniques of the Impressionists. Upon returning to San Francisco, he established a studio on Telegraph Hill and devoted himself to serious easel painting. Active in the local art scene, he had several one-man shows in San Francisco and Oakland before being drafted into the army during WWI.
