In his catalogue raisonne of Charlot's prints Peter Morse notes that artist made "five complete sets of progressive proofs of all thirty-two subjects... One set was divided up among copies 1-32 of the edition... each of which contains the progressives of one print. The other four sets were bound in four volumes each and given to: (1) the artist; (2) the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; (3) Lynton R. Kistler; and (4) Merle Armitage." Morse further notes "Mr. Armitage no longer has his set, and it has not been located." The present set is that set prepared for Mr. Armitage and is signed by him at the front of each volume. Inserted at the front of the first volume is an original watercolor by Charlot, inscribed by him to Armitage, Christmas, 1933. Many of the proofs are signed by Charlot in pencil.
