Popular Japanese historical novel about Tokugawa Ieyasu and his decades-long struggle to become the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan, which effectively ruled Japan from the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. The serialized tale about the period from 1603 to 1867 took author Yamaoka Sohachi 18 years to write.
