The albumen photographs depict Emperor Hito, Empress Haruko, farmers, laborers, samurai, women, and two pieced of porcelain from Van Buren's collection. A very rare and important monograph, published by the American Consul General within a generation of Commodore Perry's first landing. Van Buren informs the U.S. public of Japan's industry in order to stimulate U.S. imports from Japan.


Rubbing to boards and extremities; offsetting to endpapers, occasional light foxing, creasing to some pages with mounted photographs; very good.
