"We are not the degraded race you would make us...": Probably the first periodical appearance of the first published words written by Chinese-Americans, responding to an anti-Chinese declaration by the third Governor of California. It was first printed in the Sacramento Daily Union in May, reprinted in numerous American newspapers and separately issued in San Francisco as a now very-rare pamphlet, then reprinted in Littell's. The same volume has three 3 articles on the Chinese in America taken from American and British newspapers.
