The only book by the sister of Onoto Watanna, both mixed-race Chinese Americans who were literary pioneers. Partly a compilation of short stories that appeared earlier in periodical form, and partly a new composition, this is considered the first book-length fiction - and the first Chinese children's stories -by a Chinese American author. The separate 1912 story, which appeared four months before the book, was probably Eaton's last original fictional periodical writing - and the only short story among her later work which did not have a Chinese theme.
