The autobiographic narrative of Mae M. Franking, ghostwritten by future novelist Katherine Anne Porter two years before publication of her first credited short story and 44 years before her famous "Ship of Fools".
It tells the story of the 17 year-old Scotch-Irish girl who met a 19 year-old student from China at her high school in Michigan. Their love grew when they both attended the University of Michigan. Despite opposition from both their families, they married, moved to China and had three children while the wife taught English and the husband did legal work. In time, Mae Franking "succeeded in becoming a proper Chinese wife and daughter-in-law."
