Born in New York and educated at American schools in China before and during World War II, Chang returned to the US to become the first American-born Chinese woman novelist.
None of her 6 novels - she also wrote three books of poetry and was an accompliahed artist - were on explicitly Chinese-American themes. The first had three young Chinese Eurasian women "seeking identity" in wartime Shanghai. The second was about a white woman dealing with a painful divorce and an affair with a married man. Chang's last novel was published in 1978, her last book of poetry in 1991.She died in 2009.
