February 3, 1854-Dated, Ornate Military Commission Signed, Partly-Printed Vellum Document Signed, “Franklin Pierce” as President and “Jeffer. Davis” as Secretary of War, measuring Washington, Very Good. Being an Ornate Military Commission measuring 12.75” x 17.25”, 1 page, for: ”... Patrick Calhoun I have nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, do appoint him Captain in the Second Regiment of Dragoons...”. Vellum is worn and heavily creased, its paper seal is missing at upper left, small fold wear losses located just above “Jeffer. Davis’ signature just touching “er” and along the center fold above. The signature for president Franklin Pierce is in rich bold brown ink and is a massive 4.5” long at lower right, just above the American flag. Ex: EAHA Auction, October 19, 1996, Lot 225.
