Charles Henry Tompkins (1830 - 1915). Union Army colonel, later breveted Brigadier General who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fairfax Court House in 1861. This was the first time a Union officer would receive the award. In 1864, he was awarded the grade of Brevet Brigadier General by President Lincoln. He continued his service to the military after the Civil War was over.
