Abraham Lincoln Campaign Lettersheet and Mated Cover
1860 Abraham Lincoln Presidential Campaign MATCHING & MATED SET of Lettersheet and Postally-Used Illustrated Envelope Cover Pair (Walcott No. 187), “The People’s Candidate for President”, Very Fine.
black & white design of the beardless candidate, inscribed “The People’s Candidate for President”, on a cover to New York, with Greenwich, N.Y. grid cancel tying a 3c rose stamp (partly overlapping design); original letter enclosed; some minor cover wear and soiling and slightly reduced at right, slight tear at back flap, overall very attractive. This 1860 Matched Set was used in September of 1862 when the correspondent, Hattie Benjamin, wrote to her cousin Horatio Ball telling of returning of school, that her father was encamped up in Norwich and was now in Washington, D.C., of being lonely with her father gone, and various matters related to a visit and lost luggage! A handsome item and quite scarce in the pairing of the original Abraham Lincoln Illustrated Envelope with the original Stationery! (2 items)
