Large Advertising Mirror “Whitehall Turkish Cigarettes”
1880s Late 19th century, “WHITEHALL TURKISH CIGARETTES,” Painted and Etched Advertising Sign and Mirror, Choice Very Fine.
Rare original 24.5” x 13.5” mirror in its original 30” x 17” wooden frame with advertising for “Whitehall Turkish Cigarettes” painted in gold, tan, red, and green-outlined letters onto the back of the mirrored glass. The base material of the sign is a very heavy, beveled-edge mirror with etched flourishes at the upper left corner and center right-hand edge. A prominent tan and green reverse-painted banner in the center of the mirror reads: “WHITEHALL”, and at the bottom of the mirror “TURKISH CIGARETTES” is reverse-painted in red with gold gilt trim. The sign is undated but was manufactured in the late 19th century. This large-size Reverse Painted Mirror Backed Sign is in choice condition, the mirror backing is bright and clear with no discoloration or streaking. The reverse painted colors are bright and vibrant and there is no fading or significant damage to the mirror or the reverse painting. Wooden frame has some dings and chipping to bottom edge, and the backing is loose but can be easily stabilized. There is some slight flaking and small losses to the reverse painted letters in some places, but these are very minor. Overall it appears very attractive for display.
