Native American, Pacific Northwest, probably Haida, ca. mid 20th century CE. A carving made from dense, marine mammal bone, in the form of a bird head of classic Northwest form, with round discs of pearlescent abalone shell for eyes. The bird's head has an elongated, curved beak which is slightly opened; behind that, it widens into a round eye form before abruptly tapering to a cylindrical handle. Thick sinew is wrapped around the handle. Long strands of black horsehair are attached to the sides of the head. Size: 12.65" W x 2.3" H (32.1 cm x 5.8 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
