For your bidding consideration is this JHS Rochester Root Beer Oak Barrel soda dispenser. The barrel shows oak construction with stainless steel bands and liner. The barrel sits on three aluminum clawed feet and has three embossed "JHS Rochester Root Beer badges and a tap. The barrel is in very good condition, but is non-functioning and missing its wooden handel for the lid. JHS and Rochester Root Beer were started by J. Hungerford Smith around the turn of the last Century in New York. Smith had developed a way of preserving fruit juices and making syrups for year-round use. He also developed his own root beer syrup and marketed his syrups to other drugstore owners. His syrups were of high quality and his Rochester Root Beer brand was well renowned. A&W Root Beer started making their root beer in California in the 1920's using syrup from J. Hungerford Smith (JHS). In 1963, The J. Hungerford Smith Company purchased the A&W Company , retaining the A&W name. The Rochester Root Beer trademark was last owned by A&W. This Rochester Root Beer barrel is believed to date to the Mid-Century. It measures 31" tall x 21.5" in diameter, and has a 4.25" x 4.35" tap with handle.
