R. Brownell McGrew (1916 - 1994). Pencil on paper; sketched studies of three men, two standing and one seated. Drawing is signed McGrew along the lower left and inscribed SK-547.
Trained as a portrait and landscape painter, R. Brownell McGrew worked for M.G.M. and Columbia as a backdrop artist before moving to the Southwest to paint the desert and its peoples. He focused particularly on the Hopi and Navajo tribes, creating portraits, but also painting and photographing ceremonies and traditions. His work became an important part of cultural conservation efforts, and he became closely involved with the tribes, becoming known to them as “The Man Who Paints the Old.†Provenance: Collection of Judith Balderson, MN.
