Rare Fossilized Dog Skull from Iron Age Site in Holland
Item Details
Description
Central Europe, River Gravel Deposit - Kerkdriel, Maas River, Holland, Iron Age, ca. 5th to 3rd century BCE. This ancient dog skull was found along the Maas River during a construction project that yielded a large amount of prehistoric and ancient remains. Holocene fossils of canids found in association with human settlements indicate the strong bond that prehistoric people had with the dog - a bond that has lasted through the ages until today. This example includes a complete upper skull with two mandibles that were from other dogs but were all found together and at the same time in the dredging operation. Size: 7.5" W (19 cm)

Provenance: acquired in 2005 from a Dutch collector

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#136127

All the teeth are original and nothing was repaired other than fixing the two mandibles together at the mandibular symphysis. Stabilized and sealed. Skull and mandibles are not from the same animal but were discovered together at the same time with remains of multiple ancient canids on the same site.
