Irish, 18th century. Oil on canvas, framed. A portrait of young Thomas Southwell, 2nd Viscount Southwell (1742-1796), inscribed 1749 / T. A. Visct Southwell u.l. and with crest u.r., unsigned; 31 x 24.75 in. (sight), 36.75 x 30.25 in. (frame).


Thomas Southwell, known as the "Honourable", was an Irish politician. He was the son of Thomas Southwell, 1st Viscount Southwell, who was an important figure of Irish politics.

Provenance: Purchased D. Lehman & Sons, 1964, Midway, Kentucky.

Condition

The canvas was laid on masonite. In-painting (on sitter's face, edges, and other areas).
