DESCRIPTION: 1864 Army of the Potomac Special Order 329. Handwritten extract of Special Order 329 dated December 5, 1864. Instructs captains and commanders to “…cause all burial grounds to be fenced in. Each Division and independent Command should have a separate lot for the interment of its dead, and all isolated bodies of deceased soldiers will be disinterred with as little delay as practicable and re-interred in the burial ground of the Division or independent Command to which they belonged…” Signed by Assistant Adjutant General Youngman, Assistant Adjutant general Hutchins, and Captain and Assistant Adjutant General Matthews. Ink on lined paper. Matted in double sided frame. MEASUREMENTS: 7-1/2” x 12” (sight). Overall in frame 14-1/2” x 19-1/2”. CONDITION: Red ink to center. Even overall toning. Not examined out of frame.
