Confederate Civil War Spy John Claiborne Signed Handwritten Letter | John M. Claiborne (1839-1909) was a Confederate Officer in the 8th Texas Cavalry (Known as Terry’s Texas Rangers) | About Claiborne: Mustered into the regiment on September 1, 1861 in Houston, Texas. Served under Nathan Bedford Forrest, Joseph Wheeler, and John Wharton, and was wounded three times during the Civil War. Served in the “Secret Service†as a Scout & Spy in Tennessee under John Bell Hood, July to December 1864.  Recommended to Confederate President Jefferson Davis for promotion to Brigadier General by General John Bell Hood, January 1865. Joined President Jefferson Davis and General John C. Breckinridge after they fled Richmond, and was captured by Union Troops near Cedartown, Georgia on May 15, 1865. Editor of a Texas newspaper, the “New Birmingham Times,†in the 1890s. Autograph Letter Signed, on the reverse of a 3 ¾†x 6†postcard. The imprinted front is also addressed by Claiborne, to “Hon[orab]l[e] G.M. Bohannon, Glasgow, Kentucky,†quite possibly a fellow Confederate veteran, concerning the publication of a poem Bohannon has submitted to Claiborne’s New Birmingham, Texas newspaper. The poem, not present, undoubtedly relates to the life and service of 8th Texas Cavalry Commander Benjamin Franklin Terry, who was mortally wounded during the regiment’s first action at the Battle of Rowlett’s Station, near Woodsonville, Kentucky, on December 17, 1861. “New Birmingham [Texas], 05/14 [18]92. Dear Sir, Your kindness is fully appreciated in sending me the poem. It came too late for me in the publication of my History in the ‘Times,’ but will be used in its book form. I had finished & published the life of Terry when I remembered the poem, & wrote to the W.M.; again I thank you & when the history is in book form will present you with Copy. Very truly, Jno. M. Claiborne, late Maj[or] Gen[era]l T[exas] V[olunteer] G[uard].†Bearing a New Birmingham, Texas postmark | In very good condition - the card is lightly / evenly toned, with mild wear to the edges / corners.
