A letter signed by Martin Luther King, Jr., March 10, 1964. On Southern Christian Leadership Conference letterhead, Dr. King.

In this powerful document, Martin Luther King, Jr. refers to his selection as Time Magazine's Man of the Year. In the third paragraph of the letter, King writes:

"The fact that such cognizance has been taken of the social revolution in which we are engaged is an indication that the conscience of America has been reached and that the old order which has embraced bigotry and discrimination must now yield to what we know to be right and just."

From the Mitchell Family Collection, Baltimore, Maryland. For four generations, members of the Mitchell family have played important roles in American politics, education and culture. The family includes many prominent and accomplished civil rights activists who were instrumental in effecting change in their own communities as well as at a national level, including assisting in the passing of various Civil Rights Acts and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Museum of Baltimore Legal History and the Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson Museum in Baltimore both reflect on this prominent family.
