MAN’S LUXURY SILK BEAVER TOP HAT AND ORIGINAL TRAVEL CASE, the hat having silk lining beneath brim, faced with French silk grosgrain, felted silk band, fully hand-sewn, interior having supple leather facing with intact silk bow, label to interior for Lincoln Bennett & Company, Piccadilly, London, and additionally marked in gold ink "By Royal Warrant of Appointment to HM the King" on the leather facing, measures to fit approximately 21 1/8", 56-57 cm, or 6 3/4 to 6 7/8 hat size, with 6" tall crown and 2" wide brim, with original leather top hat travelling coach case, leather top incised with M. Steiner’s NY pat, handled case lined with printed cotton, with brass details, substantial weight, approximately 13" W, 9" H. Circa 1901. Sizes as described.
Hat In excellent condition with very minor soiling beneath brim and slight perspiration marks on leather facing from wear, otherwise fully intact, without shattering or damage; case in very good condition with soiled interior cotton, detached handle, broken leather top strap, lacks padlock, small holes on underside and wear from exposure.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Irene Sarnelle, Staunton, VA.
Catalogue Note: The Royal Warrant on the top hat label specifies King Edward VII (1901-1910), indicating that Lincoln Bennet was the sole supplier of men’s luxury hats and toppers to the King and the royal family.
