A large 19th century leather-bound Martin Luther German Bible with numerous engravings by Gustave Dore | Dimensions: 17" H x 13" W | This leather Luther Bible is in very nice condition, with many remarkable plates of Gustave Dore Biblical artwork | Provenance: Ms. Gloria Lynch of La Jolla, California | Gustave Dore (1832 - 1883) was a renowned French artist, printmaker, illustrator and sculptor who worked primarily with wood engraving | The engravings in this bible are from "The illustrations for La Grande Bible de Tours," a series of 241 wood engravings by Gustave Dore (1832 - 1883) for a new deluxe edition of the 1843 French translation of the Vulgate Bible, popularly known as the Bible de Tours.La Grande Bible de Tours, issued in 1866, was a large folio (grand in folio) edition published in two volumes simultaneously by Mame in Tours, France and by Cassell and Company in England in 1866. The French translation known as the Bible de Tours had originally been published in 1843 and was done by Jean Jacques Bourass (1813-1872) and Pierre sir Janvier. These illustrations were so immensely successful that they have been reproduced numerous times worldwide, influencing the visual arts and popular culture in ways difficult to measure. The series herein comprises 139 plates depicting scenes from the Old Testament and 81 from the New Testament.
