Lot 0321
George III Walnut Bureau

late 18th century, the banded and rectangular top above a slant front opening to a storage well and a variety of drawers and cubbyholes, flanking a central cupboard, over two short and two long graduated drawers, all banded, raised on bracket feet.
h. 39", w. 33", d. 19"

Condition

In good "as found" condition. The piece exhibits a number of past veneer repairs, shrinkage cracks, wear and abrasions. There are a number of small veneer chips and flakes around the perimeter edges. The case appears to be solid at the frame's joints. There is no notable side-to-side movement in the case. There is a detached bracket for one of the interior wells; it is present. The lid retains a lock but no key. The upper two drawers were formerly fitted with locks, the mortised section now with a wooden patch. The lower drawers retain their locks. The slant lid hinges are replaced. The brass bail pulls are cotter- pinned replacements. There are vertical shrinkage cracks on both sides of the case, with considerably more on one side than the other.
