Continental Empire Mahogany Commode

early 19th century, the rectangular top above a conforming case fitted with a frieze drawer over two long recessed drawers, flanked to either side by engaged parcel-gilt and ebonized caryatid figures, raised on tapering square legs.

Condition

In very good polished and restored condition. The piece appears to be French-polished. The ebonizing and gilt has been re-touched. The case is solid and tight. The top exhibits shrinkage, including a filled shrinkage crack. There is a similar crack on one side of the case. Locks are present; key is not. Drawers slide freely. The drawers do not show evidence of drillings for any other pulls in the past.
