Europe, Italy, ca. 15th century CE. A fascinating stone floor tile or possible wall decoration from a tomb inside a church, made of a round piece of marble. One side is carved into a high relief figure of a helmeted warrior, seemingly depicted at the moment of his death, with an arrow or other weapon through one eye. The face is weathered, with a thick beard and thick hair that dominate it. The other side of the disc-shaped tile is a mosaic of inlaid red, cream-colored, and slate-colored marble, forming a sunburst with "IHS", representing Christ, at its center. The tile has been put into a specially-made marble stand for display that is probably from the 19th century based upon the weathering to its surface. Size: 10.85" W x 14.75" H (27.6 cm x 37.5 cm); 16.1" H (40.9 cm) on included custom stand.
