Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zela people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A charming hand-carved wooden stool with three anthropomorphic legs, each in the form of an adult human figure of indeterminate sex holding a child. The carving style is without ornament, highlighting the important features of the figures without overly complicating the smooth lines of the wood. Around the edge of the seat, the wood has been finely incised into a rope-like motif. Size: 8.75" W x 15.25" H (22.2 cm x 38.7 cm)
Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection
