Description
DOUGLASS SUPPORTS BLACK JOURNALISM81. FREDERICK DOUGLASS ALS, 1p, 4¾"x6¼", Anacostia, D.C., Jul 20, 1888. On his address imprinted letterhead to Magnas L. Robertson regarding Douglass' support of the black press of the day:. "I am very sorry that I cannot serve you. I have already taken an interest in the [Black journal] People's Advocate and promised to press its claims upon the National Republican Committee. Otherwise I would be glad to serve the National Republican Leader..." Darkly penned and signed. Fine example beautifully presented within suede matting highlighted by gilt filet and matching gilt and wood frame with double hinge. Overall 7½"x9¼". Suspended over similar large frame housing two different b/w portraits of this important abolitionist leader with brass descriptive plaque noting, "'Born Into Slavery - Escaped From Slavery - Championed the Freedom of All Slaves.'" Overall 15½"x28½". Ex Genchi Collection. Est: $1900-2500
