**First Time At Auction**
Near East, Byzantine Empire, minted in Constantinople, ca. 565 to 578 CE. A gold (AU) solidus from reign of Emperor Justin II. Obv: inscribed D N I-VSTI-NVS PP AVG, frontal, armor bust of the emperor with helmet, Victoriola and shield. Rev.: VICTORI-A AVGGG O / CONOB, Constantinople with spear and cross-globus depicted frontally. Star in the field. Size: .75" W (1.9 cm); 4.6 grams
Justin's reign was marked by the loss of most of Italy to the Lombards and various other unsuccessful wars, making the presence of Victoriola, a cult figure of Victory on a globe, on this coin rather ironic.
Provenance: private New York, USA collection; ex German collection
