Frederick Montague Charman, American (1894-1986) Hudson River evening, signed Montague Charman, L.R. Watercolor, 21 3/4 in. X 30 in. framed Emigrated to America, where by the 1920's he had obtained a teaching position in the Fine Art Department at Syracuse University in New York. Over the years Charman developed a significant reputation as a watercolorist and fabric designer. A listed member of the American Watercolor society with national exhibit credits including: the Art Institute of Chicago, the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester NY, and the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo NY. Charman's work is now in many museum collections around the country. This large watercolor is titled "Hudson River Evening", likely dates from around 1940. With its, it both demonstrates Charman's commitment to a modernist sensibility and the sphisticated approach to composition and color that characterized his design work
