Kriegsmarine Naval Dagger

Lot 0091 Details

Description
This Beautiful Third Reich Kriegsmarine Naval Dagger was captured and was a veteran bring back by a soldier named Ferris Hall. It comes out of an estate in Whitesburg, Ky. This 2nd Model Naval Dagger has a lot of charm. It is an older example that originally had a ball pommel, and the solid celluloid grip has toned to a most beautiful shade of orange, perhaps a bit darker than a tangerine. The color is even throughout the grip. The pommel is the 1938 changeover type that replaced the ball top. The Navy was the last branch of the service to add a swastika to their edged weapons. These changeover pommels are particularly handsome, with more detail than the standard types and with much deep wings on the eagle. Because this is an early dagger it also has the official 1929 crossguard. This guard is thinner than those used on later models. It is a beauty, with very deep fouled anchor center blocks and finely detailed raised acanthus leaves on the guard arms. The button ends are nicely lined and have crisp nipple tips. It has a push button release that is drilled into the guard; the late examples used a notch, which was cheaper. Now to the grip; it remains in perfect condition and is a lovely, uniform shade of orange. It is interesting to note that the replacement pommel slightly cantilevers over the grip, as later grips were a little large. The scabbard is an earlier type. It is the lightning bolt type and is as straight as an arrow. It has a very fine patina and the original gilding remains. The stamped pattern features the usual palmettes, lightning bolts, ermine feet, and acanthus leaves. This type of scabbard was offered by firms including Hörster and Klaas. The throat is retained by a pair of dome head brass screws. In keeping with the early years of this piece the blade etch is etched with the the fouled anchor etch. This particular blade is in fine condition, with minor loss to the blade etching. The obverse of the blade is stamped with the Knight Head trademark of the WKC firm. Weighs 0.87lbs
