Libyan 'Meteorite Impact' Tektite Desert Glass

Lot 3285 Details

Description
A large natural desert glass tektite showing the original surfaces, lightly polished by the desert winds and resulting from an ancient meteorite impact with the silica sands. Cf. Bonewitz, Dr Ronald L., Rocks & Minerals, 2005, p.75 for information on tektites. 68.57 grams, 75mm (3"). Ex Heri collection, West Sussex, UK; found Sahara Desert, Libya. Desert glass tektites are produced when the energy displaced by a meteorite impact with the silica sands results in melting and fusion. This specimen has a very pale, slightly yellowish colour and exhibits a very fine translucency, making this a magical material. [No Reserve]
