Place Published: New York
Publisher:Acme Newspictures Inc.
Date Published: 1940
A gathering of 40 original b&w photographs, each approx. 18x23 cm (7¼x8½"), from this New York-based news agency, each photo with its original printed mimeographed caption slip attached at bottom, dated in September or October, 1940.
Half of this group documents life and events in England—and especially in London—in this period before American’s entrance into the War, when Germany was heavily bombing the City as well as part of the countryside. Twenty photos are of London, mostly showing bomb damage, bomb removal, effects of bombs on the population. With title captions such as “In Search of a New Home,” “The Work of One Bomb,” “London Maternity Hospital Bombed,” or “No Dancing in Lambeth Walk.” There are also photographs from Hong Kong (“Last Major British Outpost in China Is Open to Air, Sea and Land Attack”), Paris, and Washington, D.C.
