  • First edition, first printing, second state. Publisher's blue cloth, stamped in blind and in silver. A near fine copy with previous owner's bookplate to front free endpaper and previous owner's gift inscription to same, as well as contemporary ownership inscription to p.188. In original pictorial dust jacket designed by Frank Lieberman, price-clipped and lightly worn, with some loss to spine ends and toning to spine and rear panel. The Moon is Down tells the story of the invasion of a mining town in Europe, inspired by the Nazi occupation of Norway during World War II. Throughout the text, Steinbeck examines the negative effects on both the townspeople living under occupation and the occupying soldiers. Not surprisingly, The Moon is Down became a high note in the chorus of anti-Nazi propaganda, and secretly translated editions were circulated in Axis-occupied countries where it had been banned. Shortly after the publication of this first edition, Steinbeck adapted The Moon is Down for the theater, and, in 1943, it was adapted into a film of the same name.
