Description
Civil War Oil on Canvas by Henry Lovie, American, mid 19th century, oil on canvas, monogrammed and dated 63 in the lower right. A period painting, the scene depicts what appears to be the 98th regiment. Inscribed in lower center with a large movement of troops fading into the distance. Stylistically, the painting is in the manner of the Hudson River School, even reminiscent of William Louis Sonntag (1822-1900) and his lush Ohio landscapes. In a period frame; 5" high x 8.25" wide (sight).
Henry Lovie (n.d.) was born in Prussia but primarily active in Cincinnati during the 1850s and 60s, working extensively as a sketch artist, topographer and illustrator for Leslie's during the Civil War. His original works are rarely discovered. (See Haverstock, "Artists in Ohio", pp. 540)
