Yale Eale ANTIQUE NATURAL HISTORY ENGRAVING 16th-17th Century Plate 138 Mythical Creature Heraldry Mythology Europe Beaufort Framed

Yale Eale ANTIQUE NATURAL HISTORY ENGRAVING 16th-17th Century Plate 138 Mythical Creature Heraldry Mythology Europe Beaufort Framed

Details: This original antique engraving on heavy laid paper is a zoological illustration dating from the 16th or 17th century. This is plate numbered 138 and features a yale as indicated by the captions, both of which read, “Eale.†The yale was a mythical creature that may have been based upon sightings of antelope and is found in European mythology and heraldry of the British royal family. It had been used as a symbol for the arms of John, Duke of Bedford, and by England's House of Beaufort. Fantastic in detail, this version of a yale depicts a horse-like body with the addition of a pair of horns. This is a charming representation of early attempts at natural history illustrations based on uncertain anatomical information and other details as was typical of this “monster†era of illustration. In the background of the picture, a yale is using its horns to battle what appears to be a pair of lionesses. This plate is capably matted and framed in a simple black wooden frame measuring approximately 16†by 13.5â€.
Condition / Notes: This plate presents very well with strong lines and some light scattered foxing/toning. Its authenticity is clear from the laid lines and other characteristics of the paper. The frame shows some age/wear indications, concentrated at the high points.
