Details: This lot is a rare antique bisque head Union Soldier doll.

This 13" doll is made by Armand Marseille of Küppelsdorf, Thüringia, German 1885. Marked Alma 13/0 German, this doll has glass eyes, a "kid" body, "mache" arms and a human hair wig with handmade clothing made with authentic materials. His pack contains a tiny tin-type, a pan & dish and 7 pennies wrapped in a wollen cloth. The pennies from 1891 to 1926 were found in his head.

This doll is very unusual because of the costuming. He is dressed as a union soldier. His authentic pouch contains a tin-type of his sweetheart, Mary H. Briggs dated 1860. The Briggs family were settlers in Yates County, NY and some were followers of Jemima Wilkinson.

The pennies are: US 1891 Indian head, US 1916, US 1920, US 1925, US 1926 and Canada 1915.

"Jemima Wilkinson (29 November 1758 - July 1, 1819) was a charismatic American Quaker and evangelist. Jemima was born in Cumberland, Rhode Island to Quaker parents. When suffering from a severe illness and in a fever, she declared she had died and was sent from heaven, reincarnated as a prophet known as the Public Universal Friend, who was neither male nor female. She called herself the Universal Friend and preached the Ten Commandments and sexual abstinence to followers forming what they called the "Society of Universal Friends." These terms were probably borrowed from The Quakers who were also called the Society of Friends.

Wilkinson preached and traveled in New England, where she was generally rejected by traditional Quakers. The Universal Friends settled for a time in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the temporary national capital and a city with a sizable Quaker community. There they attracted followers. In 1790, The Society moved to western New York, to settle on land newly purchased from the dispossessed Seneca people. Most of the Seneca and other Iroquois peoples had been forced out of the state, having been allies of the British during the American Revolutionary War. Wilkinson and her followers founded Jerusalem, New York, since renamed as Penn Yan. It is located in Yates County at the north end of Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region."
