Watercolor portait of Indonesian man by Theo Meier (1909-1982).With frame: 26.25" x 23". Without Frame: 16" x 19.25".---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------(From Wiki):"Theo Meier ( Basel , March 31, 1908 - Bern , 1982 ) was a Swiss painter who was mainly active in Bali and in Thailand .Meier studied at the art academy in Basle and, thanks to a grant from the academy, was able to start a career as an artist. After a successful assignment for a portrait, Meier got all kinds of recommendations and traveled to Berlin where he came into contact with, among others, Max Liebermann , Karl Hofer and Emil Nolde . Then he lived in Dresden where he got directions from Otto Dix . Back in Basel, he made portraits of the composers Arthur Honegger and Igor Strawinsky . When he was 24 he left, inspired by the work of Paul Gauguin , to Papeete on Tahiti . He did not find here the primitive simplicity that one can see in Gauguin's work, but his experiences as a painter were decisive here, especially because of the tropical nature.A year later he went to Bali , where he found the culture he had missed in Tahiti, in a tropical setting . He settled in Sanur , began painting and became friends with other artists on the island, including Walter Spies . He was visited by artists and politicians and married in 1936 for the first time with a Balinese woman. After the invasion of the Japanese he fled to Saba . Much of Meier's work was lost during that time. After the war and the independence struggle, Bali lost much of its innocence, but Meier continued to work there. He received commissions from President Sukarno, among others. In 1948 he had a daughter with his second Balinese wife. After a short stay in Switzerland, he left for Thailand in 1957 and finally settled in Chiang Mai where he would continue to live and paint until his death."
