Maurice Utrillo - Street Of Paris

Lot 0049 Details

Description
in the manner of Maurice Utrillo "Street Of Paris" pastel on paper circa. 1920, private collection approx. 19x13in. Maurice Utrillo was a French painter noted for his picturesque cityscapes. The son of a painter and artist’s model, his mother Suzanne Valadon encouraged her child to learn to paint. Born Maurice Valadon on December 26, 1883 in Paris, France, Utrillo spent his life documenting the streets and alleyways of Montmarte on canvases with a style associated with the primitivism of Henri Rousseau. An admirer of Alfred Sisley and Camille Pissarro, Utrillo’s buildings achieved their characteristic texture via the addition of plaster to the paint. Classified as one of the les maudits (the cursed) along with Amedeo Modigliani, the bohemian lifestyle that both artists shared was one of hardship. Utrillo died in Dax, Aquitaine, France on November 5, 1955 at the age of 71.
