The Baule people believe that every married man and every married woman have a partner in the other world of spirits, that is in the bush or in the afterlife. It is possible to communicate with this imaginary partner - called 'Blolo Bian' (male) or 'Blolo Bla' (female) - in order to ask for advice or discuss everyday problems. The present 'Blolo Bla' is made of wood and dyed black. It has a finely executed, typical Baule hairstyle, a beautiful face, characteristic scarification marks and a prominent navel.
Provenance: Simon du Chastel de la Howarderie (1926-2014)
