The Kota placed guardian figures called mbulu ngulu (image of the spirit of the dead) in baskets that held the bones and the skulls of important ancestors. They revered these relics of important leaders in the belief that their extraordinary powers transcended death. The rudimentary, diamond-shaped bodies of these figures have faces sheathed in contrasting brass and copper which may been intended to reflect or deflect.
